On Wednesday, the NBA’s regular-season MVP was announced, and it surprised few people that the Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic won the award.

It is his third MVP award in the last four seasons, which puts him in some very select company, as he’s one of just nine players to win the honor at least three times.

Jokic earned the honor this year by nearly averaging a triple-double: 26.4 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 9.0 assists a game.

Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić is the recipient of the Michael Jordan Trophy as the 2023-24 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player.

Well deserved

However, some fans feel that others, such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, were more deserving of this year’s NBA MVP.

This fan would’ve voted for Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.

While Gilgeous-Alexander put up outstanding numbers and led his Oklahoma City Thunder to the best record in the Western Conference, many would still have to agree that overall, Jokic is a better player.

Doncic led the league in scoring average and improved his 3-point shooting and defense, but the Mavs only finished fifth in the West, while Denver was second and had the same record as the Thunder at 57-25.

Now the focus for Jokic will be entirely on his team, which trails the Minnesota Timberwolves, 0-2, in the second round of the playoffs.

The Nuggets have been held under 100 points in both of the first two games, and they will need to find an elixir for the Timberwolves’ stifling defense if they are to come back and have a real shot at advancing.
