The entire NBA world is reacting to the devastating loss of Jerry West, the basketball legend who just passed away at 86 years old.

Stephen A. Smith had grown close with West and his family over the years and shared his thoughts on Wednesday’s “First Take.”

Smith called West: “just a brilliant, brilliant basketball mind, somebody who loved the game, somebody who cared passionately about the game, about uplifting the game.”

“He is going to be sorely missed,” Smith added.

Smith listed a number of things that West did beyond just playing for 14 amazing years in the NBA.

He spoke about the work that he did for the Memphis Grizzlies, Golden State Warriors, and Los Angeles Lakers as an executive.

For example, he spoke out against the Warriors possibly trading Klay Thompson, a move that would obviously greatly help Golden State become four-time champions.

He was also instrumental in moving Shaquille O’Neal to the Lakers and earning Kobe Bryant after the draft.

West’s impact on the league was about so much more than his 14 All-Star appearances and his spot on the NBA logo.

He was a gifted basketball expert who knew the game inside and out.

Beyond that, he was valued by everyone he worked with.

The fact that he was an executive and advisor for so many teams over the years shows that he was respected and loved by the entire league.

Now that he is gone, experts like Smith and others are looking back at West’s life and career and noting all the ways he changed and advanced the NBA.

The celebration of West’s life isn’t just about a special basketball player but about a beloved man who was respected by all.
