Reed Sheppard Says Learning From One Rockets Veteran Will Be ‘Unbelievable’

The Houston Rockets are a team on the rise after they significantly improved during the 2023-24 NBA season.

After signing veterans Fred VanVleet and Dillon Brooks last offseason, the Rockets came within earshot of making the Play-In Tournament and competing for a postseason spot.

Although they just missed the cut, Houston was awarded with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and used it on Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard.

Sheppard is a bit undersized and lacks elite athleticism, but he’s a legitimate outside shooter who can score both on and off the ball and is a crafty playmaker as well.

The former Wildcat is a worthy player to add to the rotation as he’s got a high floor and could develop into a high-end starting guard.

Sheppard’s also got the benefit of learning under VanVleet and he admitted how incredible the opportunity is via SiriusXM NBA Radio.

“Being able to learn from him is going to be unbelievable,” Sheppard said.

VanVleet is a popular comparison for Sheppard given their size and skillsets, so it’ll be interesting to see how much the rookie can soak up from his veteran mentor over the next couple of seasons.

The Rockets are still a ways away from competing in the Western Conference, though their young core of Alperen Sengun, Amen Thompson, Jalen Green, Jabari Smith Jr. and Sheppard is an exciting group to build around.

Assuming things go according to plan and the core develops steadily during their time together, Houston could be a legitimate threat down the line.
