James Wiseman’s NBA career has not gotten off to an ideal start since being the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, and he was unable to crack the Detroit Pistons rotation this past season consistently.

Wiseman’s rookie contract just expired and the Pistons have reportedly made a decision about his future.

Evan Sidery of Forbes shared that the Pistons are electing to renounce Wiseman and will not be extending him a 1-year qualifying offer, which will make him an unrestricted free agent.

The Pistons will soon renounce James Wiseman making him an unrestricted free agent.

Instead of giving Wiseman a 1-year qualifying offer, Detroit prefers to clear more cap space.

The former No. 2 overall pick will be an intriguing buy-low option on the veteran’s minimum market.

Wiseman is still just 23 years old and clearly an exceptionally talented big man who will now become an intriguing buy-low option for somebody in free agency.

He averaged 7.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game on 61.3 percent shooting this past season in 17.3 minutes per game.

Wiseman looked promising with the Pistons after last year’s midseason trade and started 22 of 25 games while averaging 12.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.

His defensive lapses and lack of aggressiveness have plagued him early in his career, but some teams will certainly take a shot on him and hopefully, give him some playing time because that’s what he needs at this stage in his development.

Wiseman was drafted during the COVID year and played just three games in college before being limited to just 84 games over his first three NBA seasons.

You’d like to see him land on a rebuilding team that can give him 25-30 minutes a game with an established point guard, perhaps somewhere like the Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, or Brooklyn Nets.
