Bronny James’ arrival in Los Angeles to suit up for the Lakers drew much more fanfare than what normally greets the No. 55 pick in the NBA draft.

But James is no ordinary second-round selection.

He will make history the first time he steps onto the basketball court with his legendary father, LeBron James, in an NBA game.

Then word came that Bronny wanted to wear No. 9, the same number worn by former Lakers guard Nick Van Exel.

Players sometimes balk at seeing their old number taken up by the next generation, but Van Exel reacted positively, showing that he still has much enthusiasm for his longtime employer.

Van Exel posted a two-word response on social media to James wanting to wear his old No. 9 with the Lakers.

According to NBA on ESPN, the former guard exclaimed, “Let’s gooooooo!!!!!!!”

Van Exel played the first five seasons of his 14-year NBA career in Los Angeles, and he averaged a healthy 14.9 points per game to complement a sterling 7.3 assists from 1993 to ’98.

Now he gets the pleasure of watching his old No. 9 run up and down the floor as James and James become the first father-son duo to ever suit up for an NBA franchise.

There may hardly be a more fascinating human interest story in the NBA when the new season tips off.

Yes, there will be trades and impact rookies and resurgent teams that no one expected.

But seeing future Hall of Famer LeBron James play alongside his son will be magical, a joy to watch for any father or anyone who appreciates the bonds of family.
