On Tuesday night, the eve of the 2024 NBA Draft, the Brooklyn Nets sent shockwaves throughout the league as they made a blockbuster trade with the New York Knicks involving star forward Mikal Bridges.

Even though ever since the Nets acquired Bridges in the trade with the Phoenix Suns, the team has considered Bridges untouchable as he seemed like a player they could build around moving forward, that clearly wasn’t the case with the Knicks giving Brooklyn an offer they couldn’t refuse.

Not only did the blockbuster trade potentially make the Knicks a legitimate title contender next season and beyond, but it also marked what could be the beginning of a fire sale for the Nets, as they could attempt to make numerous trades.

With the Nets getting a lot of draft capital back after the trade with the Knicks, Brooklyn will likely continue to make moves to build up that capital, and three-time All-Star Ben Simmons could be a part of those moves, according to Evan Sidery of Forbes.

The Nets now have the opportunity to explore utilizing Ben Simmons’ massive $40.3 million expiring contract to take on unwanted salary in exchange for more draft capital.

Simmons has only played in 57 games for Brooklyn over the past three seasons.

Simmons has been a shell of his former elite form as one of the best defensive players in the league ever since he pushed his way out of Philadelphia a few years ago, as he’s dealt with several injury issues and hasn’t been the same player when on the basketball floor.

Along with Simmons’ serious decline in skills and availability, he has a massive contract, which could be one of the worst in the league right now, if not the worst.
