One of the key pieces on the Boston Celtics prior to this last season was Marcus Smart.

The All-NBA defender spent nine seasons with the franchise before being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies last offseason.

Smart, who won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2022, recently gave his thoughts on his old team winning the title.

“Shout out to Jaylen, Jayson and the Boston Celtics on the championship…I’m proud of them…I know everyone is expecting me to be salty,” Smart said on Run Your Race.

Similarly to DeMar DeRozan being traded from the Toronto Raptors prior to when they won the championship a few years ago, a similar situation happened here.

Marcus Smart was drafted in the first round by Boston back in 2014.

He would go on to be named to the All-NBA Defensive First-Team three times over his nine years with the club.

Smart was moved as part of a three-team deal that involved the Washington Wizards too.

Now 30 years of age and on a Grizzlies team that finished last year with a 27-55 record, Smart isn’t in the best situation in terms of contention.

That is the tough part about the NBA.

It is a business, and the Celtics were able to land a valuable big man in Kristaps Porzingis.

More likely than not, Smart should be welcomed back as a member of the team’s Hall of Fame at some point after he retires.

He had a really solid career with the team and showed nothing but class after seeing his old team win the championship.
