The Dallas Mavericks’ unexpected run to the NBA Finals ended on Monday night when they succumbed to the Boston Celtics in Game 5, 106-88, which gave the Celtics their 18th world championship.

Luka Doncic ended his first finals appearance with a solid game: 28 points on 12-of-25 shooting, 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals.

However, he went 2-of-9 from 3-point range and had seven turnovers, and at times in this series, he had trouble consistently hitting his shot.

LeSean McCoy said on Fox Sports 1’s “Speak” that Doncic is “the worst All-Star” he’s ever seen in his life, and he cited a lack of effort on defense and an unwillingness to go after loose balls.

Doncic led the NBA in scoring and averaged nearly a triple-double in the regular season, and some even felt he should’ve been named the MVP over the Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic.

He flirted with averaging a triple-double in each of the last five seasons, which has led many to feel that if he ever got enough help, a championship could be inevitable for him.

Midway through last season, Dallas traded for fellow perennial All-Star Kyrie Irving, and midway through this season, they brought in P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford to help plug in some holes in their frontcourt.

Plenty of people have criticized Doncic for a lack of effort on the defensive effort, as well as not being supremely conditioned and not taking great care of his body in the offseason.

Sometimes, losing a championship is exactly what motivates a young superstar to take his dedication to the next level, and perhaps from here on out; we will see the very best of Doncic, not just physically but also mentally and emotionally.
