The New England Patriots made a potentially franchise-altering decision this offseason.

After several rumors and comments about the team wanting to move on from Bill Belichick, the noise came to fruition.

Belichick left his long-time post as head coach, giving an opportunity for former player Jerod Mayo to step in, hoping to bring fresh eyes and perspective to this team.

The Patriots have struggled to find consistency since Tom Brady’s departure, especially at the quarterback position, which has caused a lot of stress and trepidation within the organization.

This could have been a reason for Belichick’s departure, but regardless of the reasoning, the Patriots are moving forward.

It’s Mayo’s time now, and with the team’s most recent draft pick in mind, he might be able to start on the right foot.

While fans now know that the Patriots had their eyes set on Drake Maye, Mayo recently peeled back the curtain on the Rich Eisen Show, highlighting what other teams in the league tried to do to secure this pick.

“Honestly, it was kinda anticlimactic. I know everyone was like ‘monumental packages [were out there]’, but we felt comfortable at three and got our guy, and honestly didn’t want to move,” Mayo said.

According to Mayo’s accounts, there wasn’t as heavy of a pursuit for the No. 3 pick as was initially reported.

It sounds like the team received some offers, but with Maye presenting as the type of player that could be a franchise star for the foreseeable future, the Patriots didn’t want to risk trading back.
