Coming into the NBA Finals, superstar Luke Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks had seemingly changed the narrative around who the best player in the league is, as some were starting to give him the nod over Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic after what he did in the Western Conference Finals against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Unfortunately for Doncic, that narrative might be shifting again after only three games played in the Finals against the Boston Celtics, with the league’s leading scorer getting exposed for his inability to play defense at a high level, which head coach Joe Mazzulla and his players are taking full advantage of.

Although Doncic is arguably the best offensive player on the planet right now, being a one-man wrecking crew with his ability to score and pass at an incredibly high level every single night, the Slovenian import regularly gets hunted for his defensive deficiencies, as he has throughout the first three games of the Finals.

Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd is fully aware of the Celtics’ tactics and might be a little frustrated with his best player being unable to make an impact on defense, via NBA on ESPN.

“That’s what the Celtics are very good at doing, is making sure when they go hunting, they get the guy that they want,” Kidd said.

If the Celtics continue to exploit Doncic’s poor defense, and they almost certainly will, this best-of-seven series may be over tonight when Dallas hosts Jayson Tatum and company for Game 4 at the American Airlines Center.

To avoid elimination, the Mavericks will need near-perfect performances from Doncic and Kyrie Irving, which will be no easy task.
