For the first time in many years, the New York Knicks have a good roster that has the potential to become even better in a short amount of time.

They have a legitimate franchise player in Jalen Brunson and solid, reliable supporting men such as OG Anunoby, Donte DiVincenzo, Isaiah Hartenstein, and Josh Hart.

But they need a legitimate second star, and it is debatable if Julius Randle is capable of being just that.

There are rumors that the Knicks will try to land a second star via trade this summer, and according to Fred Katz, while they aren’t actively shopping Randle, they know Randle would have to go out for them to land that second star, per NBA Retweet.

REPORT: The Knicks aren’t trying to trade Julius Randle, but they understand that trading for a star might require them to do so, per @FredKatz.

Randle will be eligible for a four-year, $181.5 million extension this summer.

Randle has been a member of the Knicks for five seasons, and during that time, he has been named to the All-Star team three times, including in both of the last two seasons.

However, while he has averaged at least 24 points a game in three of the last four years, he isn’t the most efficient of scorers, and his decision-making and shot selection can be questionable at times.

New York needs a second star who will fit in alongside Brunson and be able to play effectively off the ball, which seems to be one reason why Randle could be on his way out.

He suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in late-January, but just prior to that, they were the hottest team in the NBA, and that hot streak propelled them to the second seed in the Eastern Conference and the brink of the conference finals.
