Over the weekend, veteran All-Star forward DeMar DeRozan decided to join the Sacramento Kings after spending the past three seasons with the Chicago Bulls.

He took his time as a free agent and finally settled on a three-year, $74 million offer from Sacramento that triggered a three-team sign-and-trade deal that included the San Antonio Spurs, with the Kings giving up Harrison Barnes and Chris Duarte.

According to Shams Charania, the Miami Heat were the other team that DeRozan strongly considered before choosing to move from Chicago to the capital of California.

DeRozan is from the Los Angeles area, so this trade will send him back to his home state, where he will be joining arguably the most talented team he has ever played for.

The Kings have already been a stacked team offensively over the past couple of years with stars De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, not to mention several capable supplemental scorers.

But now, the Kings will have three legitimate scoring threats, all of whom are also talented playmakers.

DeRozan, who will turn 35 years old in about a month, averaged 24.0 points and 5.3 assists per game this past season, and he is a master of the mid-range area, not to mention a big threat in crunch time.

The one big minus with him is the fact that he isn’t a good 3-point shooter and that he attempts very few treys, so head coach Mike Brown will have to find a way to hide that deficiency.

But if he does, DeRozan should help the Kings take a step forward after they were knocked out in the play-in round and missed the playoffs this past season.

Sacramento finished third in the Western Conference during the 2022-23 season, and perhaps the Kings can finally win their first playoff series since 2004 this coming season.
