Gordon Hayward’s Wife Sounds Off On Trade To Thunder

For the last several years, Gordon Hayward had been languishing on a Charlotte Hornets team that was going nowhere and didn’t have the talent to make any real progress.

Midway through this season, he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder, a rising young team that finished with the top seed in the Western Conference this season by attaining a 57-25 record.

But he saw his playing time greatly diminish, and Thunder executive Sam Presti said he’s “learning” after deciding to land Hayward at midseason.

Hayward’s wife responded on Instagram by asking why the Thunder would acquire him, only to play him sparingly, per Clemente Almanza.

Hayward has been a 3-point specialist who can also be a supplementary facilitator, and he recovered from a horrific foot injury on opening night of the 2017-18 season to return to his accustomed level of production.

In 25 games with Charlotte this season prior to his trade, he averaged 14.5 points in 31.9 minutes a game, but those numbers fell to 5.3 points in 17.2 minutes after relocating to Oklahoma City.

In the playoffs this spring, he averaged a minuscule 6.6 minutes a game, took a total of just three shots and failed to score a single point.

The Thunder lost in the second round to the Dallas Mavericks in a six-game series that was relatively competitive, and one has to wonder if Hayward could’ve helped change the outcome had he gotten legitimate playing time.

The Thunder are a very young team, and perhaps they could use a veteran such as Hayward moving forward, but he will be a free agent this summer.
