Over the last few months, there have been a lot of rumors and speculation around the NBA that veteran sharpshooter Klay Thompson would leave the Golden State Warriors due to the two sides not being able to see eye-to-eye on a contract extension.

Once NBA free agency got underway this past weekend, the news broke that Thompson would indeed be leaving the Bay Area in hopes of signing a lucrative long-term deal elsewhere, with the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Lakers becoming his two most likely destinations.

After a lot of momentum seemingly going in the Lakers’ way, with the storied franchise desperate to add a third star alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis, Los Angeles appeared to have a 50-50 chance of landing the four-time NBA champion.

Unfortunately for the Lakers, Thompson made his decision on Monday, as he chose to join forces with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving instead of heading to Los Angeles, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

BREAKING: Free agent Klay Thompson plans to join the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50M deal with a player option, sources tell ESPN. Thompson ends his historic Warriors run as part of a multi-team sign-and-trade that’ll also send Josh Green to Charlotte.

Here are some reactions to the news of Thompson picking the Mavericks over the Lakers in free agency.

Great addition. Huge upgrade. Klay Thompson has declined on defense but he's still a sniper from 3. Big step up from having Hardaway launch 7+ bricks a game.

The Mavericks shot 29.7% on open 3PT in the Finals.

Klay Thompson shot 41.8% on open 3PT last season.

After falling to the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals recently, it became clear that the Mavericks needed another piece to the championship puzzle to get over the top against the heavyweights in the league.

Although Thompson is nowhere near the dominant two-way player he once was with the Warriors; he might fit in nicely in Dallas as that third star and benefit from the open shots he’ll get while playing alongside Doncic and Irving.
