This year’s NBA Finals start on Thursday, and the series will pit the favored Boston Celtics versus the gritty Dallas Mavericks.

The Celtics appear to be strong favorites, but there is also a growing feeling that the Mavericks are worthy challengers and have a very real shot of winning.

On its official Twitter account, ESPN released a hype video for the series that features Luka Doncic and Jayson Tatum, the two leading men in this matchup.

Many have Tatum as the favorite to win Finals MVP honors, but Doncic is second according to the oddsmakers, and it’s for good reason.

Doncic averaged a league-high 33.9 points a game in the regular season while improving his 3-point accuracy to 38.2 percent and putting up 9.8 assists and 9.2 rebounds a game.

His production has held up so far in the playoffs, and in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, he hit the game-winning 3-pointer in the face of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert, the Defensive Player of the Year.

That shot is prominently featured in ESPN’s hype video.

Meanwhile, Tatum had another excellent season, but he will be facing some demons in this championship series.

In the 2022 NBA Finals, which the Celtics lost in six games to the Golden State Warriors, he played very poorly, and in Game 7 of last year’s Eastern Conference Finals, he scored just 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting.

In this upcoming series, Tatum will either reinforce the narrative that he doesn’t play well in big games, or eliminate it and help Boston claim championship banner No. 18.
