The Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly on the verge of hiring Kenny Atkinson as their new coach.

The Golden State Warriors assistant will get another shot at being the main guy after being years removed from the sidelines.

Now, the Cavaliers will be able to focus all of their efforts on the biggest priority on their agenda.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, they’re very confident in their ability to sign Donovan Mitchell to a contract extension.

Cavaliers working to secure two fronts: Cleveland is confident about reaching a contract extension soon with Donovan Mitchell and is in final stages of deciding its new coach, according to sources.

For years, the word around the league was that Mitchell wouldn’t extend his stay in Cleveland and that the Cavaliers would be forced to trade him at some point.

Fast forward to today, and that’s no longer the case.

Of course, some are worried that his decision could be motivated by his knee injury, as there haven’t been that many updates regarding his situation or even whether he’s going to need surgery or not.

Whatever the case, Mitchell should be very excited about getting to work with Atkinson.

He brought out the best version of D’Angelo Russell and also got to work very closely with Stephen Curry in the Bay.

Also, Mitchell staying put would pretty much mean that Darius Garland could be on his way out.

His camp will reportedly push for a trade to a place where he can thrive as the sole ball-handler, and the Cavaliers should have plenty of offers for the talented guard as soon as they make him available for trade.
