Analyst Says 1 Veteran QB Is At A ‘Career Crossroads’

The Pittsburgh Steelers knew they couldn’t afford to have a subpar offense anymore.

That’s why they revamped their quarterback room and why they didn’t hesitate to give Russell Wilson some competition.

Trading for Justin Fields fueled a debate about who should be the starter.

But, at the very least, that will be Wilson’s job to lose.

With that in mind, NFL analyst Tom Blair claims that Fields’ career is at a crossroads right now (via Around the NFL):

“There still appears to be, uh, “meat left on that bone” in terms of what the dynamic Fields can offer, though, and I wouldn’t mind seeing another QB castoff follow the Baker Mayfield trajectory (formerly known as the Ryan Tannehill trajectory?) by re-establishing himself as a viable starter,” Blair wrote.

On the one hand, it’s not hard to understand why the Chicago Bears moved on from him, as they had the chance to get a generational talent.

On the other hand, Fields is clearly gifted and still has some upside, so there’s always the chance that he can lift his career back from the ground.

Some could make a case for Fields being a better option than Wilson at the moment.

For starters, Wilson struggled mightily since leaving the Seattle Seahawks, and it seemed like Pete Carroll had foreseen his decline.

Also, Fields might be a better fit for Arthur Smith’s offense, not to mention the fact that he’s younger and, therefore, could be there for much longer.

The Steelers will consider all their options, and it won’t be shocking to see Fields take the field at some point in the season.

Of course, if that happens, his margin for error will be close to zero, and it might be the last chance he has to prove that he’s a starting-caliber player in this league.
