After parting ways with legendary head coach Bill Belichick and handing the reins over to Jerod Mayo, the New England Patriots are headed into a new era of football, with the team also recently bringing in a quarterback who they hope will be the team’s new franchise player.

Although the team recently brought back veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett, the Patriots were fully intent on drafting a rookie quarterback in this past NFL Draft, and that’s precisely what they did with the No. 3 overall pick.

Ultimately, the Patriots drafted quarterback Drake Maye out of the University of North Carolina, who the team has high hopes for moving forward, but there’s no telling when he’ll see the field.

Tim Hasselbeck of ESPN argues that the Patriots should play Maye right away to see what they have with the rookie quarterback, via NFL on ESPN.

“If you can’t handle being in a tough situation, then you don’t deserve to be a franchise quarterback in the National Football League,” Hasselbeck said. “So I think he needs to play right away.”

Although Hasselbeck thinks Maye should be thrust into the fire right away, the safe move for New England would be having him on the bench behind Brissett for at least the first season or until the veteran starts struggling and a change needs to be made under center.

It’ll be interesting to see what direction the Patriots go in and whether Maye will be the Week 1 starter or if the team decides to run with Brissett right out of the gate next season.
